Choosing the leather for your boots is not as easy as picking the right style, because the leather you choose will determine how long your boots will last. Although all kinds of leather typically last for generations, there are leathers that are sturdier than others.

There are two major groups of leather, one is chromium tanned leather which is used for cheaper types of boots. The tanning process cost less if you do it with chromium that is why the boots made out of this kind of leather are a lot cheaper compared to others. Most chromium tanned boots have bluish green blemishes, something you will not see in other types of leather. One of the favorites of avid cowboy boot fans is leather that is vegetable tanned. Boasting a nice and even coat, a vegetable tan is what you need to find if you want quality boots.

Cowboy Boots for Summer?

Published by under Cowboy Boots

Summertime is a chance for people to take a break during the rest of the year’s colder climate. With the onset of warm weather, people flock to beaches, lakes, and other places to cool off while also enjoying warm sunny days and since the temperatures are rising, what you wear must also be in season.

Cowboy boots are made to keep the feet warm. Although they look cool, boots are made for warming the feet during cold climate. Unless you still feel cold on a warm summer day, then boots will keep your feet snug and heated. Boots aren’t really made for warmer weather. Although the old western movies might depict cowboys traveling through the desert, keep in mind that it could get as cold as it is as hot in the desert at night.

Boots in a warm, sunny, summer day isn’t really a great ideaeven if you see girls from Hollywood sporting them. Since cowboy boots are made primarily of leather, expect a great deal of heat to be trapped inside. Unlike running shoes or rubber shoes that have vents, most boots are sealed and lined with thermal material to keep heat in. Avoid sweaty and smelly feet this summer by wearing something other than your boots.

Buying Cowboy Boots: Fashion vs. Function

Published by under Cowboy Boots

Buying a pair of cowboy boots can be a feat especially if you do not know what you will be using it for. A nice smooth sole for riding defines a functional boot and this is something that men should always buy. Unless you are going to the Oscars or attending a wedding, a fashionable pair of boots for men is rarely in use. For day to day boots, you would need to make sure that you get a functional pair of boots.

Women who want to be fashionable and still be able to ride a horse can buy one of those Paisley style boots since they are comfortable and look chic at the same time.

If you live in the city, it would be best to get a pair of fashionable boots rather than a functional pair since you won’t need it to be functional anyway.

Taking care of your cowboy boots does not only entail waterproofing them and cleaning them. Conditioning them is one great way to make them last longer and look newer every time. The first thing you should do is clean your cowboy boots the usual way i.e. by using a damp, warm cloth to get rid of dirt. After the thorough cleaning, you would need to apply leather conditioner.

Make sure you use a soft rag and put an ample amount of leather conditioner on it. Lather it on your boots in circular motions without applying too much pressure. The conditioner will not ruin your boots’ leather and you do not have to worry about the color either since it won’t change it in any way.

Be sure to condition your boots before waterproofing them so you get the best results. Once you are done, you can wear those boots in the dressiest parties or for special occasions.

Waterproofing Your Boots

One of the best things you can do to protect those work boots is to waterproof them. To do this, you would need beeswax.

There are lots of brands to choose from but what real cowboys use it Skidmoor’s since it is a great beeswax product. When you buy the said item, it will be too hard to apply it on your boots that is why it is recommended to put the whole can in the microwave and heat it up for about 3 seconds.

Applying the semi-melted beeswax on our boots will protect the leather from the elements most especially water. You would need to apply it in your seams.

There is no need for you to apply it on the whole boot, just target the areas that will touch water. After applying beeswax make sure to wipe off the excess. Once the wax is wiped off, you already have waterproof boots that will repel water and prevent rotting.

After applying beeswax, you can rub a water and stain repellant to weatherproof your pair of cowboy boots.
