Designing your own pair of cowboy boots is a good idea if you want a pair that is yours alone. The first step in doing this is to locate a good boot maker. There are established ones that make custom cowboy boots so basically; you won’t run out of options. Take a look at the boot maker’s portfolio and see if you like how the boots came out. You should pay attention to his or her inlay technique and the stitching pattern. If the technique passes your standards then go ahead and start designing your own pair of cowboy boots. You will need the guidance of the boot maker in measuring your feet. Call first before going to the shop so that the boot maker will make time for you. This is a critical part of the custom cowboy boot-making process because if you do not get the right feet measurement, the boots will not come out right and won’t fit your feet.

Choose a style from the maker’s portfolio. If you have a different style in mind, do not forget to bring a photo of it. If you can draw, it is best to bring a drawing of your design to the boot maker. After that you should choose which leather to use for your boots and which colors should be used for the threads. You should also determine the angle and widths of the heels, the pattern on the toes, etc.
When done, the boot maker will give you his or her drawing of your design. Once you have approved it, he or she will start making it immediately.
